What Causes Autoimmunity?

One reoccurring theme you see over and over again in the scientific literature about autoimmune diseases is that they are caused by the combination of genetics and toxins.

Genetic and epigenetic factors interacting with the environment over time are the main causes of complex diseases such as autoimmune diseases.” 1

“It's likely that lupus results from a combination of your genetics and your environment.” — The Mayo Clinic 2

“Type 1 (Diabetes) is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic susceptibility and environmental factors …” — The Mayo Clinic 3

So what are these “environmental factors” causing autoimmune diseases and where are they found?

What are GMOs?

GMOs or “Genetically Modified Organisms” are plants that have had their DNA artificially modified at a genetic level. This artificial modification involves combining the DNA of plants with animal, bacteria, or viruses creating organisms that do not occur in nature or by normal crossbreeding methods. The purpose of this genetic modification is to enable the plants to withstand deadly doses of herbicides and pesticides.

Is There A Link With GMOs and Autoimmune Diseases?

Yes! They cause leaky gut, disrupt gut bacteria, and    all conditions which are foundational to autoimmune diseases. Thus GMO's lay the ground work to trigger an autoimmune disease.

Glyphosate

Researches have found “clear evidence that glyphosate disrupts gut bacteria.” 4 Why is this important?

An imbalance of gut bacteria has been found in every autoimmune disease in which its presence has been investigated. 5

And this disruption in gut bacteria is also directly linked to other health conditions such as:

“gastrointestinal disorders, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, depression, autism, infertility, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.” 6

Toxic Pesticides

Did you notice that many of these health issues are also very common in autoimmunity sufferers? Science brings out yet another link between glyphosate and autoimmune diseases in how it prevents protein digestion. Notice…

“glyphosate may interfere with the breakdown of complex proteins in the human stomach, leaving larger fragments of wheat in the human gut that will then trigger an autoimmune response …" 7

The body doesn't recognize the partially digested proteins and attacks them, which in turn leads to the immune system attacking other parts of the body that look chemically similar.

Here is a list of more health issues associated with glyphosate:

  • Is a probable cancer-causing carcinogen 8
  • Depletes tryptophan leading to insomnia and depression 9
  • Turns normal food allergenic 10
  • Disrupts production of bile leading to fat malabsorption 11
  • Systemic inflammation due to destruction of gut lining 12
  • Inhibits specific enzymes that play an important role in detoxification 13
  • Causes other toxins to be even more damaging 14
  • Binds to nutrients leading to mineral deficiencies 15
  • Liver and kidney disease (in animal studies) 16

As you look at this list, remember that GMO foods have the highest concentration of glyphosate which is why it's so important to avoid them.

Leaky Gut

Glyphosate damages the delicate walls of the small intestine causing what’s known as “leaky gut.” The intestinal wall is lined with a protective layer that absorbs nutrients but keeps out harmful substances from getting into the blood stream.

When leaky gut occurs, it causes openings between the cells that line the gut wall. Then particles in the digestive tract, both good and bad, can enter into the bloodstream which triggers autoimmune and allergic reactions.

Leaky gut is one of the main steps in the development of autoimmune diseases and has been found every time its presence was investigated in an autoimmune disease.17

GMO Corn

Another example of intestinal damage by GMOs can be found in genetically modified corn which produces its own bacteria called Bt-toxin that kills insects by exploding their stomachs after eating it. For this reason, Bt-toxin is often called the “hole-punching toxin” since it punches holes in the bugs digestive tracts.

However a 2013 study that looked at the effects of Bt insecticidal toxins on humans found that it’s also lethal to human cells. 18 Not surprising, is it? This combined with loads of clinical evidence suggest that GMO corn is probably “punching holes” in our digestive tracts also.

The second reason why GMOs are dangerous is because of the genetic modification done to GMO plants.

It had been difficult to get the companies responsible for GMO plants to perform unbiased scientific studies on their own GMO products. However, a nine-week study on rats was performed and concluded that they found no detrimental health effects. France decided to do the same study feeding GMO food to rats, but instead of limiting the study to the extremely short nine weeks, they extended it to 9 - 24 months. 19

What happened? The rats formed enormous tumors about a third the size of their bodies, they had severe liver damage, and acquired digestive problems. Several of the rats had to be euthanized because they were is so much pain from the tumors. The results of this study lead France to ask for a Europe-wide ban of GMO corn.

  • Potentially pre-cancerous cell growth in the digestive tract
  • Smaller brains, livers, and testicles
  • Partial atrophy of the liver
  • Immune system damage
